Capturing temperatures around the floor to determine the average temperature
Aim: How much does temperature in TAS change in different areas?
Background Information:What temperature should an office be? A general recommendation is that the temperature be held constant in the range of 21-23°C (69-73°F). In summertime when outdoor temperatures are higher it is advisable to keep air-conditioned offices slightly warmer to minimize the temperature discrepancy between indoors and outdoors. The most comfortable temperature is 22.22°C.
Approach 1 Compare temperature between floors and outside temperature
Method:
Set up vernier probe
Record the temperature at one end of the hallway on the first floor
Walk 1.4 meters (approximately two tiles) forwards and record the temperature again
Repeat steps 2 & 3 until a total of 25 data points have been collected
Repeat measurements for 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors
Approach 2 Measure the temperature along the path from the swimming pool to wherever, measure the distance and see how fast temperature changes within that distance for a mean walking speed/temperature. Method:
Open the doors in the pool that would usually be open when the pool is in use
Take the temperature of the water at one corner of the pool.
Walk one meter (approximately 5 tiles) along the side of the pool and record the temperature.
Repeat step 3 until a total of 25 data points have been collected.
Record the temperature of the air where swimmers usually get out of the water.
Walk to the changing room, recording the temperature every meter (approximately 5 tiles)

Conclusion
Comparing the results to the recommended temperature for thermal comfort in office by Canadian standards. Our school average temperatures for all four floors are below recommended temperature. This being said, the low temperature may have an effect on the health of TAS students. However, since the temperature of the pool has not much of difference compared to the outdoor temperature, it shows that pool activities will not have an effect on the health of TAS students.
Evaluation There are several shortcomings with this experiment. Firstly, our experiment only collected data for two different environments; the corridors and the swimming area. When collecting our data we did not consider possible sources of air currents, which would influence the temperature. Finally, our experiment was done on a day where there were very small numbers of people in the building---we did not consider the possible effects of other people being there on our data. There are several solutions that could be implemented in a future experiment. Obviously, a wider range of areas could be considered, including different classrooms. For the second issue, the air conditioning could be switched off briefly while the measurements are being made, and then switched back on immediately afterwards. In terms of biological changes when the indoor temperature and out temperature contrasts greatly, the body increases its basal metabolic rate, more fat as insulation of vital organs and change in blood flow patterns.

Evaluation There are several shortcomings with this experiment. Firstly, our experiment only collected data for two different environments; the corridors and the swimming area. When collecting our data we did not consider possible sources of air currents, which would influence the temperature. Finally, our experiment was done on a day where there were very small numbers of people in the building---we did not consider the possible effects of other people being there on our data. There are several solutions that could be implemented in a future experiment. Obviously, a wider range of areas could be considered, including different classrooms. For the second issue, the air conditioning could be switched off briefly while the measurements are being made, and then switched back on immediately afterwards. In terms of biological changes when the indoor temperature and out temperature contrasts greatly, the body increases its basal metabolic rate, more fat as insulation of vital organs and change in blood flow patterns.
