However, I feel that this lab is rather meaningful in terms of discovering the problems with the school. Although I'd probably disagree with the assumption that obesity would run rampant in the school, it was rather interesting to note the lack of healthy options we have when choosing our meals. Regardless of the exercise students may gain from P.E. class, it would be beneficial for the school to further look in on improving the choices in cuisine to reflect upon healthier aspects.
I personally find the topic of this experiment really interesting as it relates to our daily food choice at TAS. It is nice how the background of the food was brought up as it raises awareness on the issue of choosing the wrong and unhealthy food. The data collection part is also really well organized along with clear tables, indicating the change in temperature and mass for each food. However, one improvement that can be done for the experiment is to by using a calorimeter to avoid heat loss.
This lab was organized in a manner that was easy to follow. The data tables are clear with values that aid the lab. However, in the future, you might want to mention how uncertainty is quantified. Was this done by standard deviation? Or was another method used? The graph used is clear and shows explicitly the conclusions drawn. I also liked how you gathered real life information through surveys of the student population, allowing us to apply the conclusions. However, seeing as you already conducted surveys, I think the information should be included in the “Data Collection” as well. This way, we’ll be able to see how the data was obtained. Also more evidence would be provided to support your conclusion. I also liked your evaluation and how you mentioned further experiments could be improved. For further investigations, perhaps the food within the cafeteria can be tested as well.
The subject matter of your experiment is both very interesting and (as I believe anyways)highly relevant in the scheme of what students have to watch out for in school. The formatting of your writeup was easy to understand and follow and had fun (to say the least) accompanying visuals. However, there is one thing that, perhaps it's my own personal bias, that I did not absolutely adore. It was in the conclusion that you wrote about how you were going to measure the the amount of energy present in a gram of food. I do not take biology, so perhaps it's assumed knowledge that calculating the calories by the amount of change in temperature in the food, but I think that it would still be nice if you guys had put it up there to clear things up because it took me a while to understand what the graphs had to do with anything.
The idea you guys presented at the end of the blog is a good one. I think that it would help set a good baseline to compare other foods with. The problem with methodology is there seems to be a little too much heat escape. I think you guys could have used a calorimeter which would have reduced the amount of heat loss. I think that your data is good for measuring foods against each other but not for getting the exact value for the amount of energy in the food. I also think you guys could have made tables instead of putting every graph into the blog.
This lab was very interesting because it addressed a basic need of humans: food! The entire lab was performed with pretty good data, however, misses many crucial parts of a good lab. It does not explain the logic behind burning food. I am guessing that the theory is that one calorie is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1g of water through 1oC. However, the lab starts to make a little bit more sense as it nears towards the conclusion. It also effectively analyzes the real-life situation of students which helps the “Environment & Safety” issue. I liked the last half of the lab; however, the first half of the lab method was hard to follow. Therefore, I would suggest some background information before overwhelming the reader with data.
The topic chosen is very interesting and very useful in its relevance to our daily choice of food consumption at TAS. The topic was well chosen and was easy to comprehend. As I scroll down the page, I could tell that this group spent a huge amount of time organizing the data tables, pictures, and colored bar graphs. Aside from that, I would suggest this group to include more background information. For instance, they could be more specific on the daily caloric needs for both men and women such that it would be easier for the reader to pick up the effect of his/her daily energy intake versus health condition.
The idea for this experiment was very interesting, and though the process seemed tedious, it was carefully evaluated, and there is evidence for more improvement.
